He received his Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Alabama in 1980 (Cum Laude) and received his J.D. degree from the University of Alabama in 1984. Omicron Delta Kappa; Mortar Board. He received a football scholarship to play for Coach Paul "Bear" Bryant at the University of Alabama and was quarterback in 1977 - 1979. He was in the law school's Trial Advocacy Program and was a participant in the school's National Trial Advocacy Team which competed against other law schools in national competitions.
He is a lifelong resident of Dothan, Alabama, and joined the law firm of Cobb & Shealy in 1984. He is a member of the Houston County Bar Association, American Bar Association, Alabama State Bar. He has been a member of the Alabama State Bar Ethics Committee and the Alabama Defense Lawyers Association. Steadman's practice is limited to civil litigation, with an emphasis on Insurance, Corporate Defense, Personal Injury, and Product Liability.

He is married to Ann Wood Shealy. They have five children: Jacqueline Ann, Steadman S., III, Peggy Anna Katherine, Robert Alford Brown, and John David.
