Info | GEORGE, Henry, Jr., a Representative from New York; born in Sacramento, Calif., November 3, 1862; attended the common schools; at the age of sixteen entered a printing office where he was employed for one year; moved with his parents to Brooklyn, N.Y., in 1880; reporter on the Brooklyn Eagle in 1881; in 1884 accompanied his father as his secretary on a lecture tour of Great Britain, at the close of which he joined the staff of the London Truth; returned to this country and joined the staff of the North American Review; managing editor of the Standard 1887-1891; served as correspondent in Washington, D.C., for a syndicate of Western papers in 1891; correspondent in England for the same syndicate in 1892; in 1893 became managing editor of the Florida Citizen at Jacksonville; returned to New York City in 1895; on the death of his father in 1897 was nominated to succeed him as the candidate of the Jefferson Party for mayor of New York City, but was unsuccessful; special correspondent in Japan in 1906; elected as a Democrat to the Sixty-second and Sixty-third Congresses (March 4, 1911-March 3, 1915); was not a candidate for reelection in 1914; engaged in literary pursuits until his death in Washington, D.C., on November 14, 1916; interment in Greenwood Cemetery, Brooklyn, N.Y.
