Info | Dave Van Kesteren was first elected as the Member of Parliament for Chatham-Kent-Essex in January 2006 as a member of the Conservative Government, led by Prime Minister Stephen Harper.
While always interested in politics, Dave first ran in the 2004 federal election. Dave’s election to office in 2006 marks the first time a Conservative represents Chatham-Kent-Essex in Ottawa in over ten years.
Dave belongs to several associations on the Hill, including the Standing Committee on Industry, Science and Technology as well as the Committee on Access to Information, Privacy and Ethics.
He is also a member of the Conservative Party Caucus, the Ontario Caucus, the All-Party Border Caucus and the Conservative Party Auto Caucus which is chaired by Jeff Watson, MP for Essex.
Reflecting Dave’s interest in international issues, he is an active member in numerous foreign relations groups. Specifically, he is involved with the Canada-Israel and Canada-Taiwan Friendship Groups, the US Inter Parliamentary Group, the Europe Parliamentary Association as well as the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association. In July, Dave travelled to Taiwan with the Friendship Group, helping to further Canada’s diplomatic and trade relations in the region.
Aside from his passion for politics, Dave has worked in the auto industry throughout his career. In 1985, Dave opened his first auto body shop, later running his own used car business and then becoming a Hyundai dealer in 1996. Over the last six years Dave’s dealership has earned the position as top 5 for customer service satisfaction among Hyundai dealers in Canada. In 2004, Dave was recognized again as he earned the distinction as one of the top 15 Hyundai dealers.
Born in Chatham to Dutch parents who immigrated to Canada in the early 1950`s, Dave is the 5th in a family with ten children. Strong proponents of the importance of family, Dave and his wife, Faye, have celebrated 31 years of marriage and have eight grown children and ten grandchildren.
Community involvement is another high priority for Dave, who is a Rotary Sunrise Club member and the former President of the Chatham Christian Business Association. It is Dave’s sense of responsibility to his community which is a main driving factor in his desire to represent Chatham-Kent-Essex as your Member of Parliament and why Dave works hard to be a voice for all residents in Ottawa.
