InfoArthur J. Crowns, Jr., 86, retired WSU Administrative Justice Professor, died Monday, October 13, 2008, at Wesley Medical Center. Memorial service will be 10:00 A.M., Thursday, October 16, at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, 7011 E. 13th St. N., Wichita. Art was born January 24, 1922 in Wisconsin Rapids, WI, the son of Arthur J. Crowns, Sr. and Elizabeth (Hentschel) Crowns. He graduated from Alexander High School, Nekoosa, WI in 1941. Arthur was awarded a Bachelor of Science degree by Stevens Point State College in 1947; an L.L. D. degree by the University of Wisconsin in 1950; an M.S.S.W. degree by the University of Wisconsin in 1958 and a PhD degree by Florida State University in 1965. He married Joan L. Cammack on April 5, 1958. They have lived in Union Grove, WI, Tallahassee, FL, Memphis TN and then moved to Wichita in 1971. They raised two sons Scott (Naoko) of San Jose, CA and Kendall (Beth) of Lisle, IL. They have six grandchildren, Madison, Lilly, Vincent, Zander, Owen and Alan. Arthur served in the US Army Air Corps during World War II, beginning June, 1942. He was commissioned second lieutenant September 16, 1943. He served in the European Theatre of Operations from March 7, 1944 to June 21, 1945. He was attached to the 450th Bomb Group, 720th Squadron, 15th Air Force based in Italy. He was shot down on April 2, 1944 and taken prisoner. Arthur was in Stalag Luft 1, Barth, Germany. He returned to the United States on June 21, 1945 and was released from active service November 19, 1945. Arthur practiced law in Wisconsin from 1950 ~ 1959. He served in the Wisconsin State Legislature from 1955 ~ 1958. He taught at Florida State University in Tallahassee, FL from 1961 ~ 1965. Arthur joined the faculty of Memphis State University, Memphis, TN where he was responsible for all courses relating to Criminology and Corrections from 1965 ~ 1971. he was appointed Chairman of The Department of Administration of Justice at Wichita State University in 1971 and from 1973 until his retirement in 1994 he was a full professor. Arthur was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Byron C. Crowns. He is survived by his wife, Joan, son, Scott (Naoko), Kendall (Beth); brother, Donald “Jim” (Marianne) of Sheboygan, WI; sister, Betty Anne (Raymond) Flynn of Anaheim, CA and many nieces and nephews.
