Donald E. Costello, 85, of Davenport, died Saturday, Sept. 20, 2014, at The Kahl Home after an extended battle with Alzheimer's disease.

Visitation will be Wednesday, Sept. 24, at the Halligan-McCabe-DeVries Funeral Home, 614 Main Street, downtown Davenport, from 4 to 7 p.m. with rosary at 6:30. Funeral services and a Mass of Christian Burial will be 10 am Thursday, Sept. 25 at St. Anthony’s Church, 417 Main Street, Davenport. Burial with military honors presented by the American Legion Post 26 will be in Mt. Calvary Cemetery.

Don was born Jan. 10, 1929, in Toledo Ohio. He was the son of James Vincent and Florence Neuhaus Costello and brother of Jim and Sr. Marcia Costello, CHM. Don attended St. Paul the Apostle school, St. Ambrose Academy and St. Ambrose College. He fulfilled his military service from 1950 to 1952 while being stationed with the U.S. Army in Germany.

Don’s business endeavors included a building construction company and electronics service and repair. Upon entering the political arena, Don dedicated 18 years of public service as Davenport 8th Ward Alderman and Scott County Supervisor. Afterwards, he continued working for the county managing facilities until retiring in 1999.

He was active in the St. Vincent Parents Club and often volunteered at St. Anthony’s Church and Our Lady of Victory Church. He was a fourth degree Knights of Columbus member. Don was also a dedicated Boy Scout leader for Troop 164.

Don was united in marriage to Mary Elizabeth Brennan on Aug. 29, 1953. Don's life was devoted to his wife Mary and their family of six children. They were blessed with 15 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren.
