Info*Forced to resign as Councillor for St. Vital when he was found guilty of tax evasion

Allan Golden was born in the Brooklands area of Winnipeg. When Allan was four years old, his mother and his nine brothers and sisters moved to the North End of Winnipeg after his father, a professional soldier in the Canadian Army, died. When Allan was eleven years old, the family moved to the West End of Winnipeg. The Golden family knew poverty well.

Though Allan Golden knew of Stephen Juba from his earliest days in Brooklands, where they first met, it wasn't until he moved to the West End (where he lived a half block from Mr. Juba) that they developed a lifelong relationship. It was Mr. Juba who encouraged Allan to get involved in City government. In fact, it was Mr. Juba who convinced him to run for Mayor of Winnipeg in 1979. Allan placed second to Mayor Bill Norrie in that election.

Allan Golden has been an entrepreneur his entire life. He began his business career in the recycling industry and was Winnipeg's last licensed Rag Collector. At the age of twenty, he started Academy Moving and Storage, which he operated for almost twenty years before he gave it to his employees. He also was Canada's leading agent with the Monarch Life Insurance Company and won many prestigious awards for customer service. He has operated Transcona Country Club for the past twenty two years.

In June, 1988, Allan Golden ran for City Council in St. Vital and won the election. He has much experience in City government, having served on every Committee of Council. He went on to win a total of five elections and served until the year 2000 when he was forced to resign. He then lost his bid for re-election.

Allan Golden has lived in Winnipeg his entire life... the last 30 years at the same address in St. Vital. He is 55 years of age and is married to Sharan Golden. They have two boys, Brock who is 21 and Michael who is 18, both of whom attend the University of Manitoba. The Golden family are members of the United Church.

Allan Golden has served in many volunteer capacities including being a Board Member of the Big Brother Association of Winnipeg for ten years. He was also a founder of the Old Market Square Association.

Allan Golden is a successful businessman with a proud history of accomplishment. Allan Golden was a successful City Councillor with a proud history of service. There has never been a harder worker at City Hall. The citizens of Winnipeg have reaped the benefits of his creativity, his tenacity, and his commitment.

Allan Golden became involved in politics because of his mentor, former Mayor Stephen Juba. Mayor Juba told Allan, "If you always do what is right to the best of your ability, you are still going to make mistakes. But the people of Winnipeg will forgive you for your mistakes and they will be your biggest defender if they know that you did your best for them."

Today, Allan Golden has dedicated himself to try to follow in Stephen Juba's footsteps. Allan Golden loves Winnipeg and its citizens. He is a Winnipegger and always will be! He would do anything for Winnipeg.
