Musical Family: his grandfather sang bass in church. His mother and her sisters all sang in the choir.Trace's uncle John plays boogie-woogie piano and uncle J.W has recorded several gospel albums.
First Public Performances: in 1973, at the Kiwanis Pancake and Talent Festival in Shreveport, La., Trace sang "Put Your Hand in the Hand".
First paid job in music: in 1980, at North Louisiana Hayride, Trace made $5.00 a song.

Permanent Injury: The pinkie finger on Trace's left hand is permanently crooked to fit around the neck of a guitar. Years ago Trace cut off the finger on a job, and he asked the doctors to reattach it in a useful position to make up for losing the ability to move it.
Big Break: Trace met Capitol Nashville President Scott Hendricks at the baggage terminal at the airport and invited Scott out to see him and his band perform i Mount Juliet, Tenn. Hendricks signed Trace to his label that night.

Previous bands: Gospel quartet New Commitment in high school; Louisiana band called Speakeasy, later named Bayou.
Early honors: Trace's band won the 1985 Regionals Wild Turkey Battle of the Bands in Dallas.
