InfoI was born in Alabama while my father was in the Army, and raised in the Philadelphia suburbs. I was the oldest of four sisters. I got my degree in Special Education and Elementary Education from Clarion University of PA, although when I was there it was called Clarion State.

That’s where I met my husband of 30 years, Jim. He’s a high school teacher.

People ask me why I founded Mom’s House, a place where single parents can get the support they need to finish school. I never intended to start a charitable organization, but I had several miscarriages before my oldest was born and in my prayers for the blessing of a child, I promised that I would do something to help children. Mom’s House is one year younger than my first child. You really can’t be more generous than God, because now Jim and I have 6 children, 5 of them boys.

The Parent’s Commission grew out of the efforts of myself and a friend to give parents a more effective voice in education. We didn’t start out to create a full scale parents rights movement, but we wound up working with folks from across the entire country to protect families from intrusive activities, and experimental educational programs. In the end, I reviewed grants for the U.S. Department of Education, and became a nationally recognized expert in many of the so-called reforms, like outcome-based education, that were being force fed to our kids.

deskAlong the way, I ran for Governor of Pennsylvania. I entered the Republican primary in 1990 against the party-endorsed candidate, who was the sitting Auditor General of the state. I remember being asked if I was “just a protest candidate”. I was definitely protesting the radical feminist agenda my opponent was promoting, but there was nothing “just a…” about it. Every citizen has the right to protest, and sometimes our convictions give us a duty to protest. That primary was one of those times. Others obviously agreed with me because when the dust cleared, I had spent $45,000 and gotten 46% of the vote. More importantly, I had proven that a person could survive in the political arena without compromising their convictions.

Along the way, my kids grew up. Now I have an architect, a professional ballerina, a Navy guy, a conservatory student, and only two at home - one of them starts college next year. Of all the things I have done, nothing is as valuable to me as being their Mom.

Last year, I managed the Congressional campaign for William Russell, the Iraqi war veteran who ran against John Murtha. It was a real privilege to work with someone who did not worry about the poll numbers when he took positions on issues.

And now, I am attempting to restore the same levels of common sense that we use around our kitchen tables to Washington.
