Info | Nathan Cullen was elected to his first term as Member of Parliament for Skeena–Bulkley Valley at the age of 31, on June 28, 2004. He was soon named the New Democratic Party’s national critic for three key portfolios: Environment, National Parks and Youth.
Before becoming involved in politics, Nathan worked in community and economic development throughout Latin America, North America and Africa. His efforts eventually focused on British Columbia, where he quickly became a leader in strategic planning and communication training for the non-profit, private and public sectors.
Nathan has lived in northwestern British Columbia for eight years. He started and ran Maravilla Consultants, a strategic consulting firm, in Smithers soon after arriving in the region, dedicating himself to the growth and development of the Bulkley Valley and northwest region.
Nathan’s move to politics evolved naturally from his development background. He embraces new opportunities to work for on a larger and more influential scale in the political realm, where regional economic development and creating a world for future generations form the foundation of his work and focus.
Transferring his skills as a mediator and facilitator to the world of politics and government has served Nathan well in getting much done for the region and more attention brought to the issues facing northerners.
Nathan’s areas of strength are:
* A passionate and articulate advocate.
* An organizer who understands the value of communities working together.
* A facilitator who takes groups from conflict to productivity.
* A visionary who believes in the strength and potential of the Northwest and its people.
* Able to work with people from all walks of life to help realize their dreams for the future.
* Connected to youth and a supporter of their issues.
* Able to speak up for you in both English and French, as the Ottawa environment requires.
When Nathan is not in Ottawa or travelling in the riding, he lives with his wife Diana, a teacher in training, in Smithers.
