Info | He began his career in elective office in 1959 with his election to the Jamestown City Council, serving as president from 1962 to 1963.
Present served the 56th Senate District, which encompasses all of Allegany, Cattaraugus and Chautauqua counties, and the Livingston County towns of North Dansville, Nunda, Ossian, Portage, Sparta, Springwater and West Sparta. He served three years as an assemblyman prior to being elected in 1968 to the first of his 16 two-year terms as senator.
Springwater Supervisor Howard Kramer described Present as "a down-to-earth, caring person" who was "thinking at all times of what would benefit the rural communities as well as the cities."
Born to Abe and Frances Price Present in Jamestown on July 28, 1921, Present got his start in politics when he was elected to the Jamestown City Council in 1959, and served as president of that body in 1962-63.
Present served with the 8th Air Force in England during World War II, and maintained his membership in the American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars until the end of his life.
He was a past director of the Jamestown YMCA, Chamber of Commerce, and First National Bank of Jamestown. Present also served as Chautauqua County Republican chair, was as past master of the Mt. Moriah Masonic Lodge and a charter member of the Kharram Grotto.
