Info | Apache Leader and Shaman
Born Goyathlay (alternately spelled Godeley, Goyakle, and Goyaałé) "One who Yawns" in Sonora Mexico (what is now part of modern-day western New Mexico) as a member of the Bedonkohe band of the Chricahua Apache Tribe.
Joined in raids with other Apache leaders in northern Mexican and southern US States during the Apache - US Conflict between 1849 - 1886. Geronimo's raids and warfare against the United States was in protest to the government confining the customary mobile and free moving Apache way of life.
Reportedly given the name "Geronimo", spanish for Jerome, by Mexican Soldiers after numerous daring raids and military success in Arispe, Sonora, Mexico.
Geronimo was among the last native American leaders to capitulate to the United States. He surrendered to Lt. Charles Bare Gateway in 1886 in Northern Mexico.
As a prisoner, Geronimo was used by the US Government and put on display at various events to capitalize on his popularity with non-native American audiences.
Died of pneumonia as a prisoner of war in Fort Sill in 1909.
