InfoDan Stevenson first was elected as 11th District representative in the Indiana House in 1994. A lifelong resident of Northwest Indiana, he was a 1977 graduate of Highland High School and also attended Calumet College.

Dan, who is a steelworker at Inland Steel, has made his mark as one of the leading advocates in the Indiana General Assembly for working men and women. He has played a prominent role in recent years in passage of legislation that increased benefits for workers injured on the job, as well as people who have lost their jobs. Dan serves as chairman of the House Commerce and Economic Development Committee, and is a member of two other House committees: Local Government; and Roads and Transportation.

Dan and Dawn, his wife of more than 20 years, have three children: Michelle, Lola Ann and Dan, Jr. They also have four grandchildren: Erik, Karen, Austin and Ethan.

Dan is a member of USWA Local 1010 and serves as assistant editor of the union's newspaper. He also is a member of the Fairmeadow Community Church of the Nazarene and the board of trustees of the Lake Area United Way. He is a past president of the Indiana Young Democrats, a past vice president (midwest region) of the United Steelworkers Press Association and a past member of the Hammond Jaycees.

Through the years, Dan has received a good deal of recognition, including the 1995 Service to Labor Award from the Northwest Federation of Labor, the 1995 Legislative Achievement Award from Indiana University Northwest, the 1997 One of Our Own Award from the Calumet Project, the 1998 Legislative Award from the Indiana Library Federation, the 1998 Special Service Award from the Northwest Indiana Law Enforcement Training Center and 1998 Legislator of the Year from the Indiana Association of Police Chiefs. He was named an Outstanding Young Man in America in 1996.
