| Info | Desiree Ontiveros is a New Orleans small business owner, community leader, and advocate.
Raised by her father, a janitor, and her mom, a homemaker, in El Paso, TX, like many of her neighbors, Desiree’s family relied on government assistance to support their 4 children when multiple minimum wage jobs could not. While they were poor in money, they were rich in work ethic, culture, love, and encouragement. This mixture of family values and lived experience were the ingredients of Desiree’s American Dream.
While attending college near home, Desiree learned quickly that the healthcare system was not equipped to give the best level of care to low income individuals. During her freshman year, her father, a former Marine, died of throat cancer after a two year battle at 57 years old. The VA declined to help with medical costs related to his cancer, so his care was relegated to substandard care afforded by the Medicaid system. This experience stands in direct contrast to her mother’s experience with cancer treatment in 2019 when Desiree was able to provide her with the best medical care available. Her father may have been alive today had her family’s economic status been different.
Desiree returned to the US in 2008 after studying and working abroad. She had gained valuable experience but found a failing economy. Like many Americans during the recession, she struggled to find employment, she quickly realized that entrepreneurship was the path forward to supporting the family that had supported her all of these years. Desiree began the pursuit of her American Dream.
