InfoJean Anne Carpenter Carnahan

Senator Carnahan holds a degree in business and public administration from George Washington University. She and Mel Carnahan, the late two-term governor of Missouri, were married for 46 years and raised four children. As Missouri?s First Lady, she visited numerous classrooms, led the fight to increase childhood immunizations and successfully pushed the legislature to pass the landmark education reforms that brought accountability and improved academic performance to Missouri?s public schools.

In 2000, Governor Carnahan was campaigning for the U.S. Senate when he, his son Randy and campaign adviser Chris Sifford were killed in an airplane crash just three weeks before the election. By law, Governor Carnahan?s name remained on the ballot and his successor, acting Governor Roger Wilson, announced his intention to appoint Jean Carnahan to the seat should her late husband win the election. On Election Day, Missouri voters elected Governor Carnahan posthumously by a 48,000-vote margin. Jean Carnahan took the oath of office on January 3, 2001.

Senator Carnahan has three surviving children and two grandsons. Her son Russ is an attorney and Missouri legislator; her daughter Robin and son Tom are also attorneys.
