Marshall travelled with his wife from Indiana to Washington D.C. in May 1925 to represent a client at the Board of Tax Appeals. He had a heart attack upon his arrival in the national capital and while his health initially improved, he then had a second heart attack and died in his hotel suite while reading the book of Mark in the Bible in the morning on June 1, 1925. President Coolidge had sought to visit with the Marshalls and sent daily inquiries about the status of Marshall's health.
