InfoDon Bell has been in elected office in North Vancouver for more than 30 years. He was first elected as an Alderman in 1970, and served 3 terms. He was elected Mayor in 1976 and served until 1982, when he did not seek re-election and he returned to the private sector as Director of Public Affairs for Canada Safeway Limited.

During his 13 years with Safeway, Don was elected to the North Vancouver School Board for 3 terms serving twice as Board Chair. He was re-elected as a municipal Councillor for a 3 year term in 1993, and in 1996, following retirement from Safeway, was once again elected as District Mayor. He was re-elected as Mayor in 1999 and again in 2002 and held that office until June 2004 when he was elected as the Member of Parliament for North Vancouver.

In Don’s first term as an MP he was chosen as Chair of the BC Liberal Caucus and served on the Finance Committee as well as the Liberal Caucus Cities and Communities Committee tasked with providing recommendations to the Federal Government on the New Deal for Cities.

Now in his second term, Don was appointed on as the Official Opposition Critic for the Pacific Gateway Strategy and Western Economic Diversification. Don has also been elected Chair of the Northern and Western Liberal Caucus Committee and has been appointed to the Transport, Infrastructure and Communities.

Don has served in many other roles during his time in elected office. He was elected by his peers for two terms as Vice-Chair of the Greater Vancouver Regional District, and was Chair of a variety of GVRD Committees including the Corporate and Intergovernmental, Water and Air Quality, and Planning and Environmental Committees. Don served 6 years as a member of the Lower Mainland Treaty Advisory Committee, the last three years as Chair. For all six years with LMTAC he was the Committee’s representative to the Tsleil-Waututh First Nation treaty negotiations. Don has also served as a member of the GVTA (TransLink) Board, Regional Health Committees, and as Board member and Trustee of the Municipal Finance Authority, as well as the national board of the Federation of Canadian Municipalities, Chair of the FCM “Film Industry in Canada” sub-committee, Vice-Chair of the FCM Aboriginal Affairs Committee, and member of the International Relations and Economic Development Committees.

Don was the GVRD representative on the Tourism Vancouver Board for 3 years and served on the successful 2010 Winter Olympics Bid Committee from 1998 – 1999.
Don is also active in non-political community activities and has served as the Honorary Chair for the BC Special Olympics, was appointed a Life Member of the BC Youth Soccer Association and the Canadian Soccer Alumni, is an Honorary Director of BC Wheelchair Sports. In 1992 he received a Canada 125 medal for his community service, and in 2003 he was presented with the Queen Elizabeth Silver Jubilee medal for his community service.
