Mike, 49, is the youngest of 10 children from a working class family. His father was the president of three separate trade unions.
After graduating from university he began in politics as a policy researcher in Ottawa. Returning to Nova Scotia, he served as assistant to the Minister of Health and as Executive Assistant to the Premier. He returned to Ottawa as Executive Assistant to the Minister of Tourism and Small Business and later worked as Executive Assistant to the Minister of Public Works and Supply and Services.
Today Mike is a successful motel and restaurant operator of 16 years who knows what its means to meet a payroll. His wife Marilyn has been a teacher in the riding for the past 25 years. Together, they have two young sons and their family is active in local minor hockey and baseball.
