Bolton and great-grandfather of Oliver Payne Bolton), a Representative and a Senator from Ohio; born in Hamilton, Madison County, N.Y., November 30, 1810; graduated from Hamilton College, Clinton, N.Y., in 1832; studied law; was admitted to the bar and practiced in Cleveland, Ohio, 1834-1846; city clerk 1836; founder of the Cleveland and Columbus Railroad; presidential elector on the Democratic ticket in 1848; member, State senate 1849-1851; unsuccessful Democratic candidate for election to the United States Senate in 1851 and for governor of Ohio in 1857; elected as a Democrat to the Forty-fourth Congress (March 4, 1875-March 3, 1877); unsuccessful candidate for reelection in 1876 to the Forty-fifth Congress; appointed a member of the Electoral Commission to decide the contests in various States in the presidential election of 1876; unsuccessful candidate for the Democratic presidential nomination in 1880 and again in 1884; elected as a Democrat to the United States Senate and served from March 4, 1885, to March 3, 1891; not a candidate for reelection; died in Cleveland, Cuyahoga County, Ohio, September 9, 1896; interment in Lake View Cemetery.
