| Info | Tony Smithers is Sinn Féin’s candidate in the Ballyfermot area for the local elections in June 2004. An energetic and enthusiastic community activist, Tony works closely with Sinn Féin Dublin South Central TD Aengus Ó Snodaigh in tackling issues of concern to the people of Ballyfermot.
Educated at Synge Street CBS, Tony (31) grew up in Dolphin House and Crumlin before recently moving to Lucan. Formerly a Master Butcher, he is married with one child and works as a taxi driver in the Ballyfermot area.
A keen GAA member, Tony played football and hurling at Synge Street and later with St Kevins where he was also a youth leader with the club, teaching hurling. Tony was prominent in the anti-Nice Treaty campaigns in Ballyfermot and led the Ballyfermot team, which helped to elect Aengus Ó Snodaigh TD. Since then he has been every active in Ballyfermot on the issues of housing, public services, the campaign against bin charges, drug dealing and addiction and anti-social behaviour. A member of the James Connolly Sinn Féin Cumann, Ballyfermot, Tony was instrumental in having a full time Sinn Féin constituency office located in Ballyfermot.
Speaking to Dublin News on his selection as Sinn Féin candidate Tony said:
"I am very proud to have been chosen to stand for Sinn Féin in the local elections. As an activist and Sinn Fein representative in Ballyfermot I am well aware of the issues and problems, which affect the people of this area.
"The people of Ballyfermot deserve the chance to raise their kids free from the threat of drugs and anti-social crime, with properly resourced schools, a transport system that serves the needs of people, basic public services which are free of double taxation and affordable housing.
"Sinn Féin has spearheaded opposition to the bin charges at City Council level and on the ground throughout Dublin and has firmly opposed the jailing of anti-bin charge protestors. "Sinn Féin has a strong record of working with people at community level. Our councillors are the hardest working elected representatives in the city. I hope to build on that record through my work here in Ballyfermot and I want to be a strong effective voice for Ballyfermot on Dublin City Council if elected next June.
