Randy Ewings 12 years of service as a state senator and as president of the Louisiana Senate can be summed up with a single word: Reform.

From the day he first took office in 1988 until January 2000, Senator Ewing devoted all his energies to challenging the political system he felt held Louisiana back. Ewing, a Democrat, is a fiscal conservative who led the way on the Balanced Budget Constitutional Amendment, control of state spending and the reduction of state debt.

As one colleague said, Senator Ewing has a fair and balanced approach to everything and everybody. His effective work and good management provided substantial support to programs directed at the education and health of children, security and support for senior citizens, practical solutions to labor and business matters and equitable treatment to all citizens of Louisiana regardless of region, race or party affiliation.

While president of the Senate, he returned $4 million in Senate surplus that was used to match $16 million in federal funds to repair and construct off system bridges. He reduced the Senate staff by 20 percent.

In June of 1999, Senator Ewing announced to the surprise of his colleagues that he would not seek re-election. In keeping with his promise to the voters and with his philosophy of term limits for legislators, he voluntarily gave up the power and prestige of the Senate presidency to return home to family and business matters and to prepare for the challenge of the Governors race for 2003
