| Info | Joseph Suliga is currently serving his first term as Senator to the 22nd Legislative District, representing the municipalities of Clark, Dunellen, Fanwood, Green Brook, Linden, Middlesex, North Plainfield, Plainfield, Rahway, Scotch Plains and Winfield Park. Senator Suliga is an advocate of smoking prevention, heath care initiatives, quality education and prudent fiscal policies.
Senator Suliga was first elected to the New Jersey State Senate in 2001. As a freshman State Senator, he was appointed co-chairman of the Senate Environment Committee. He also serves on the Senate Budget and Appropriations Committee. The New Jersey Reporter's Political Almanac has described Senator Suliga as "the Democrat's most impressive watchdog of the State's budget."
Senator Suliga is a supporter of heath initiatives that help New Jersey's families. He has introduced legislation that will help chemotherapy patients purchase wigs to conceal treatment-related baldness by requiring heath care providers to cover the cost. The Senator is also the sponsor of a bill that would entitle every woman in New Jersey over the age of 35 to a yearly mammogram, regardless of whether or not they have health insurance coverage.
Joe Suliga has been a staunch supporter of abolishing teen smoking. He is currently the prime sponsor of a bill that would not only prohibit teens from possessing or purchasing tobacco products in New Jersey, but also implement tobacco education programs. A bill the Senator sponsored in the 1998-1999 Assembly session remains the only such bill to ever pass the State Legislature.
When residents all over New Jersey were flooded out of their homes by Hurricane Floyd, many found that their insurance policies did not cover flooding. Senator Suliga was a prime sponsor of the Flood Insurance Notification Act, which requires home insurance providers to notify homeowners if their policies cover such tragedies.
The Senator has served on the Clean Ocean and Shore Trust (COAST), a wildlife preservation and port dredging advocacy group. Senator Suliga is working with COAST to develop a long-term solution to the dredging crisis facing the state.
Joe Suliga has over 20 years of experience serving the public. In 1976, he became the youngest person ever elected to the Linden Board of Education. He served on the board until 1984 when he was elected to the Linden City Council. After serving two terms on the council, he was elected to the Union County Board of Chosen Freeholders, where he remained until 1990. Senator Suliga was first elected to the New Jersey State Assembly in 1993 and he remained there until his election to the Senate in 2001.
Senator Suliga's dedication to serving the community has won him numerous honors and awards, including a humanitarian Award from The Arc of New Jersey, a nonprofit organization promoting the rights of the developmentally disabled and their families.
The Senator was selected to participate in the University of Virginia's Darden Graduate Business School's program for emerging political leaders - the same program utilized by the nation's top generals to enhance their motivational and speaking skills.
Senator Suliga is a graduate of Roselle Catholic Regional High School. He holds both a B.A. in political science and a Master's degree in public administration from Kean University and a second Master's degree in Industrial Relations and Human resource Administration from Rutgers, the State University of New Jersey. The Senator is married to Annmarie Pakulski, who is a graduate of the Rutgers School of Engineering and currently works as an environmental engineer.
