Riegle served in the U.S. House 1967-1977. He was elected as a Republican in 1966. In the following years, Riegle became increasingly liberal. In the year 1972, Riegle only voted with the Republican Party in 10% of the votes. After Ogden Reid changed from the Republican Party to the Democratic Party, Riegle was considered the next most likely to switch. Riegle made the change of party on 2/27/1973. He resigned from the House on 12/30/1976 so he could take office as a U.S. Senator. [Source: New York Times, 2/28/1973]

Riegle served as a U.S. Senator from Michigan from 1976 to 1995. He was elected to the Senate in 1976. The following month, he was appointed to fill the vacancy occasioned by the death of U.S. Senator Philip A. Hart and took office on 12/30/1976. During his term of office, Riegle served as chairman, Committee on Banking, Housing and Urban Affairs (One Hundred First through One Hundred Third Congresses).

After the end of his service in the Senate, Riegle joined Shandwick Public Affairs in Washington, D.C., serving as executive committee chair 1995; adjunct professor, Michigan State University School of Business, 1995-.
