InfoKeith was born and raised in Honolulu and attended public schools through 10th grade before transferring to Punahou, where he graduated in 1983. Keith studied finance at the University of Hawaii and received his law degree from the UH William S. Richardson School of Law. Keith worked as a civil litigation attorney and in 1998 became the Executive Director of the Hawaii High School Athletic Association.

During his 12 years at the helm of high school sports, Keith created a stage for thousands of student athletes to compete. He is responsible for creating state tournaments for football, girls wrestling, girls golf, air riflery, canoe paddling, cheerleading, judo and girls water polo. By initiating the Division II tournaments for smaller schools — first in football and then in every team sport — he essentially doubled the amount of state tournaments offered. But Keith is perhaps best known for saving high school sports in a moment of crisis. In 2009, a state budget shortfall meant the end of many high school athletic programs: junior varsity sports in particular were on the chopping block. Keith spearheaded the “Save Our Sports” project — a statewide public-private grassroots effort to raise over $1.5 million to keep high school athletic programs afloat.

In 2010, Keith was appointed Executive Administrator and Secretary to the UH Board of Regents. Currently, Keith is the Senior Vice President of Island Holdings, a locally owned family of companies including Island Insurance, Atlas Insurance Agency, Tradewind Capital Group, IC International, and Pacxa.

Throughout his career, Keith has remained active in community service. He was Vice Chair on the City and County of Honolulu’s Police Commission, served on the Board of Directors for the Honolulu Firefighters Foundation and was a member of the Hawaii State Board of Education, among many other organizations.

Keith’s career has provided him with the opportunity to interact with people from all walks of life throughout the state — from working class families to educators, coaches and CEOs. Throughout, Keith has remained a champion of the underdog and the less fortunate and is driven by a sense of helping the people he is serving.

Keith has been married to Bonny Amemiya, who is chief financial officer at aio group, for 23 years. Their son, Chris, recently enrolled in college on the mainland. They reside in Pauoa.
