InfoJudge Thompson's term of office began in January, 1997. The 1996 election was Judge Thompson's first attempt at public office.

Judge Thompson is a graduate of the University of Alabama where he received his Bachelor of Arts degree in 1984. In 1988 he was awarded a Juris Doctor degree from the Cumberland School of Law at Samford University and was admitted to the practice of law in the State of Alabama. His legal career has included serving as Assistant Legal Advisor to the Governor of Alabama and practicing in the law firm of former Chief Justice Perry Hooper. He has also been employed as a corporate attorney in the insurance- and health related fields.

Judge Thompson currently serves as the Chief Judge of the Court of the Judiciary. He is a former member of the advisory board for the Service Guild Early Intervention Program. He is a member of the American Bar Association, the Alabama State Bar Association, and the Montgomery County Bar Association. He has practiced before all state courts in Alabama and is admitted to practice in the Federal Courts for the Northern and Middle Districts of Alabama.
