InfoSylvia Rubio has always believed in the value of community service. She currently works in government as a Community Liaison Representative and is also a nonprofit executive and businesswoman. She is the proud mother of two young adults who are in college, with the youngest just starting her first year.

Sylvia is the daughter of immigrant parents who came to the United States looking for a better life for their children. Her father began working under the Bracero Program as a farmworker and later in construction, while her mother worked as a housekeeper, with both teaching her the importance of discipline, hard work and determination.

Her family’s limited financial resources meant that Sylvia had to start working at an early age. Her relentless determination in sales propelled her into a successful career in international sales, traveling throughout the country and abroad. Her growing interest in business then led her to fulfill her dream of opening her own restaurant, which she ran for over twelve years. Her experiences gave her a full understanding of the struggles that small business owners face on a daily basis. Sylvia was also a licensed Realtor, which gave her the flexibility to volunteer with local groups and nonprofits. Coming from a family of educators, Sylvia helped create programs for underserved communities. As she became increasingly involved in nonprofit work, she decided to transition into public service.

For the past eight years, Sylvia has served as a Community Liaison Representative for the Mayor and City Council of a local city. She is also the Vice President of AFSCME Local 1017 and advocates for the rights and fair treatment of working families. She has worked on homeless housing and resource fairs and senior programs. As a proud military family member, Sylvia helped spearhead a successful Military Career Day program for high school students, which has been modeled by neighboring cities, and helped organize Veterans Day observances for local families. She has also created other programs, including events that promote unity, inclusion and cultural understanding.

Her vast experience in the private and public sector gives her firsthand knowledge of the value of both and the insight on how best to represent of all communities. Her personal connection to domestic violence has also made her aware of the much-needed support for victims and their families. She has assisted in the creation of programs that include women and youth conferences, domestic violence round-tables, and also led the organizing committee of WINGS – a training program dedicated to the empowerment of young women by educating them on healthy relationships, financial literacy and workforce introductory programs. Sylvia continues to give back to the community as President of the Rubio Foundation, which is dedicated to the enhancement of the quality of life, education and advancement of underserved communities.

Sylvia’s belief in public service is without a doubt a family tradition – her brother currently serves overseas as a proud member of the US Army and all of the Rubio sisters are deeply involved with non-profits that promote women, education and support underserved communities. With her experience and relationships built over the last 20 years, Sylvia understands the needs of the 57th Assembly District and will be ready to serve on day one.
