| Info | Steve puts cutting crime and improving public transport at the top of his agenda. He believes London deserves a Mayor who will represent all 33 of London's boroughs, not just those in Zone One.
He has studied the success of former Mayor Rudy Giuliani in reducing crime levels in New York and believes that London can use that experience to make our capital a safer place. As the founder of the Crime Concern Trust, now the largest crime prevention charity in the UK, he understands how to forge partnerships between local people and the police to make London a safer place. Over the coming months, Steve will also be going on patrol in London's crime hotspots to find out first hand how police officers on the beat tackle crime.
Steve has huge experience in tackling complex transport issues: he oversaw the only new section of the Tube to be built in the last 20 years - the Jubilee Line Extension - and the introduction of the "Countdown" system that gives London's bus passengers up to date information on services. Recently, he was appointed to chair the National Cycling Strategy Board by the Labour Government.
Steve is Chairman of the Prince Michael International Road Safety Awards Scheme and has pursued his long-standing interest in transport issues as President of ITS (UK) the national telematics industry and government forum and as a Patron of the national cycling charity, Sustrans. As someone who is committed to jobs and business in London and to cutting congestion and pollution, he has worked as Director General of the Road Haulage Association and is a Vice President of the National Society for Clean Air.
Beginning his career in the engineering and motor industry, Steve is one of the few politicians who is also a serious businessman. As such, he is no stranger to London's issues of jobs, business and affordable housing.
A founder of the drug rehabilitation charity, ADAPT, and a former Trustee of RADAR, the charity that helps people with disabilities, Steve has worked with people from across the political spectrum to help Londoners in need. He is a Trustee of the London Action Trust, which helps young offenders find their way back into employment. He has also been a long time supporter of the National Council for Civil Liberties.
Steve regards London's diversity as a great source of its strength and has worked to enhance the voice and increase the presence of London's ethnic communities in London's politics, earning the praise of those working to promote the participation of London's ethnic communities in all aspects of London life.
Before standing as a candidate for London Mayor, Steve was a Conservative Member of Parliament for fourteen years and Minister for Transport in London for nearly five.
Working in London, Steve is a regular commuter by bus, tube and train. He lives in Lambeth with his wife Emma and their five year old son, Harry.
