InfoLike many of you, I moved to Colorado over 20 years ago to enjoy the great outdoors by hiking, biking, riding, flying and skiing as well as to take advantage of the tremendous economy that existed in Colorado at the time.

I was born and raised in Kokomo, Indiana, a factory town built on natural gas, the auto industry, the steel industry and of course, since it was Indiana, high school basketball. My father, a retired steel worker, taught me the value of hard work and that every job is important, no matter how big or small it seems to be. My mother, a retired auto factory worker, taught me the value of education and how to dream big dreams. My parents met in grade school and recently celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary! They were, of course, the product of their parents.

My paternal grandparents were raised in the hills of Kentucky, moving to Indiana in search of a better life for their family. Through willpower and hard work, they accomplished their dreams. My maternal grandparents opened a gas station in a small town in Indiana with a population of 1,000 people in 1925. Against all odds, they kept that gas station open through the depression, World War II and the 1974 gas crisis while keeping the ownership in the family for over 70 years.

My parents, grandparents, siblings and extended family of aunts, uncles and cousins exposed me to a wide variety of business men and women, factory workers, farmers, small business owners, and teachers. The diversity of their backgrounds and careers led to a wide variety of political beliefs and a lot of animated discussions and debates. I learned from all of them and developed a unique perspective of how government can and should support all Americans as they pursue their personal American dream.

And the high school basketball – well it taught me that victory should be accepted with humility and defeat, when it comes, and it always does, is temporary.

I have benefited from those life lessons and have been fortunate to pay them forward to my own children, the communities I have lived in, and the companies I have worked for.

I earned my bachelor’s degree in accounting from Ball State University Summa Cum Laude, at the age of 20 and was later honored to be named one of 75 Outstanding Young Alumni as part of the University’s 75th anniversary celebration.

In 1988, at the age of 29, I was elected to the Board of Education of the Metropolitan School District of Pike Township in Indianapolis, Indiana, serving one year as Vice President and two years as President of the Board. This experience allowed me to develop an in-depth understanding of how to provide excellent educational opportunities to our community’s children. I was honored to participate in the recognition by President Bush (#41) in the White House Rose Garden of one of our elementary schools as a National Blue-Ribbon Schools Program award winner.

I was a candidate for the Republican nomination for the office of Mayor of Indianapolis in 1991. My campaign focused on the need to support small businesses as part of the overall economic development of Indianapolis and the need to ensure that all of the Indianapolis public school systems were producing high quality, educated graduates who would be able to benefit from that economic development.

I have been a certified public accountant since 1983, working for 10 years as an independent public accountant with a Big 4 international accounting firm. After leaving public accounting, I worked as a senior financial executive in various small and large financial services firms in Colorado, Florida, Indiana, and Texas. In the early 2000’s I took a break from the financial services industry to serve as Chief Executive Officer of Colorado’s Ocean Journey, now known as Denver’s Downtown Aquarium, and led it through the financial restructuring that allowed it to remain open as a valuable cultural resource to our community. These experiences taught me how to run organizations as efficiently as possible and how to allocate limited resources to competing priorities. Having led companies in multiple states, I understand how states can support the growth of business and the creation of new jobs. I also understand how state tax policies and regulations can drive those businesses and jobs away.

I believe it is the responsibility of every citizen to give back to their community in whatever way they can. I have served as a Cub Scout leader and Little League coach. I have served on the Boards of Directors of non-profit organizations serving students in their battles against substance abuse as well as serving underprivileged members of our community who need an occasional helping hand when looking for a job or putting food on their table. I have taught Junior Achievement programs to middle school students and provided mentoring to high school students as they planned their future careers.

I am a master scuba instructor and have helped transform the lives of hundreds of people by opening up the aquatic world to them. This has allowed me to see first-hand the impact of pollution and environmental changes in our oceans. On a personal level, I proudly support a number of conservation organizations doing great work to protect our wildlife and environment on both the land and the sea. I am an instrument rated private pilot with 1,800 flight hours and love riding my Harley Davidson. These three activities, diving, flying and riding, have allowed me to see and experience our world in a way that is both intimate and holistic. It has given me an appreciation for the beauty of God’s creation and our impact, positive and negative, on this beautiful world.

I Believe In
Respecting each and every individual as a fellow human being
Respecting the Constitution
Respecting God
I Will Fight To
Support the U.S. Constitution and Bill of Rights as written and intended by the founders of this great nation.
Protect the Constitutional rights of all citizens, not simply the special interest groups chosen by the political elite as the favored few.
Empower families to raise and educate their children as they believe most appropriate.
Empower small businesses to innovate, grow, create jobs, and make our State a better place to live and work.
Reduce taxes and fees so that you can decide how to spend your money, and not have those decisions dictated by the State. Your Taxpayer Bill of Rights must be saved and strengthened.
Reduce government spending by increasing the efficiency and effectiveness of government.
Repeal unnecessary government regulations that burden our citizens, our schools and our businesses.
Focus the effort of government on assisting those citizens and addressing those challenges that truly need the support of government – not simply on the pet projects of our elected officials who have decided that they know what is best for all of us.

Most importantly, I will fight to empower our Community to come together with its innovative Spirit and Perseverance to create a better future for all Coloradans.
