| Info | I was born Charles George DeNure in Flint, Michigan on June 2, 1949. As my father’s name was also Charles, I was nicknamed, “Chip.” I grew up in Platteville. My father was the Dean of the College of Agriculture at UW-Platteville. My mother was also a teacher, who later chose to work in the home caring for me and my two brothers.
In 1971, I graduated from UW-La Crosse in Education with a major in History and a minor in Political Science. I was a student teacher at the Viroqua Middle School, but never was able to find a job due to an incredible surplus in teachers, especially history teachers. I went to work for John Deere in Dubuque, Iowa for ten years running a machine. I was a member of UAW-Local 94. In 1979, I took a leave of absence from Deere and went to Oklahoma City as a Volunteer in Service to America (VISTA). I was there a year and worked in a poor neighborhood trying to make things a little bit better for the people there.\\In 1982, due to an economic slowdown, I was laid off from John Deere. I went back to college at UW-Platteville and earned a degree in Communications the following year. For the next five years, I worked as a radio announcer at three radio stations. My first job was at KFMD in Dubuque, which later became KAT-FM. I also had jobs at WGLR in Lancaster and WCOW in Sparta. Radio was a lot of fun but I never had the greatest voice and I was terrible at doing commercials, so I got out of it.
In 1991, I took a job with the Wisconsin Department of Corrections as a probation/parole agent. I started in the Dodgeville office and then transferred to La Crosse three years later. I became active locally. For a few years I was a member of Livable Neighborhoods. I was active in their efforts to stop a highway known as the North/South Corridor from being built through the neighborhoods of La Crosse. I helped write the 1998 referendum question that was endorsed by the voters that fall. The picture above is from the Oktoberfest parade in 1998, where Livable Neighborhoods had an entry.
In 2001, I ran for Mayor of La Crosse. I finished 3rd in the voting out of seven candidates. The two candidates surviving the primary were Mayor John Medinger and City Councilman Jerry Every. Both called me seeking my endorsement, which I gave to Medinger at a press conference at City Hall.
After Ron Kind ignored his constituents and voted to authorize George Bush to go to war in Iraq, I was so incensed I took out "Ron Kind Should Resign" billboards in La Crosse.
