Info | Polly Mann graduated from Hot Springs High School in Arkansas in 1937. It was the eve of World War II, and to help out in the national crisis, she started working for a U.S. Army camp. At the camp, Mann witnessed American soldiers practicing field techniques such as shooting and bombing.
She also educated herself by reading extensively. The more she read, the more she felt the war was an unjust and evil activity. "My Christian education taught me to love one another and love those who hate you," Mann said. "How could that be accomplished when you're pointing a gun at somebody?"
After the war, she married Walter Mann, who served into he war. They moved to Marshall, Minn., where they raised their four children. But her thought on war never faded, and she decided to take action by speaking out against the Vietnam War in the mid-1960s.
After moving to south Minneapolis in 1980, Mann was instrumental in the formation of Women Against Military Madness (WAMM) in 1982. The organization seeks to dismantle systems of militarism and oppression. Today, WAMM sends out a monthly newsletter to 2,000 people and has its own web site (www.worldwidewamm.org ).
