InfoJames K. (Jimmy) Johns grew up in Mandarin, Florida. He received dual degrees in Applied Physics from Jacksonville University and Civil Engineering from the University of Florida. In the 1990s he worked for International Paper Company in Louisiana as a project manager where he was ultimately responsible for compliance with the Federally-mandated Clean Air and Clean Water Acts. In 2004, he founded Solid Rock Engineering Consultants, Inc., which now serves clients across the Southeastern United States, providing land planning, design and permitting services for private and public developments. He raised a family for the last 15 years in Julington Creek Plantation and plans to retire in the area with his wife, Kathy.

Through these experiences he enjoyed learning and affecting the international, multi-year view of a global corporation and then moving that experience into ownership of a small business. It is this combined experience that will be invaluable to his leadership on the St. Johns County Board of Commissioners. Says Jimmy “As a small business owner, I understand how to balance multiple demands simultaneously and how to identify and adapt to changing priorities. As a project manager for International Paper Company, I understand the scope of massive projects where long-term planning is critical. These experiences and skills will be implemented to lead our County’s continued successes.”

Entrepreneurship has also given him a unique perspective of the Commission from the public’s side of the table. “I have worked with the St. Johns County staff and presented projects before the Commissioners to receive approval for various developments since moving into the County in 2000. I feel like I can provide insight to the Commission on behalf of the public while advocating for the direction of the Commission to the public.”
