| Info | Council Member Lucy Cruz, Democrat, was first elected to serve a two year term representing the newly created 18th Council District in the Bronx on November 5, 1991. Born in the town of Bayamon in Puerto Rico, and raised in New York City, she was the first Puerto Rican woman to be elected to the New York City Council.
As a new member of the New York City Council, she has already been appointed to four prestigious Standing Committees: Education, Youth Services, State and Federal Legislation and Aging. She represents the communities of Bronx River, Parkchester, Soundview, Clason Point, Harding Park and Castle Hill; and parts of Ferry Point, Zerega, Van Nest, Hunts Point, Crotona Park East, West Tremont and West Farms.
Council Member Lucy Cruz has had a distinguished career as a public servant. Immediately preceding her election to the Council, she was the Director of Community Affairs for Bronx Municipal Hospital. Prior to that she served as District Manager of Bronx Community Board 9, was Executive Aide to Deputy Mayor Herman Badillo under Mayor Ed Koch, worked as Mayoral Liaison to Mayor Abe Beame's Office of Neighborhood Services, and was elected and re-elected to serve as a Member of Community School Board 12.
Council Member Lucy Cruz is an avant guarde, energetic leader who has galvanized communities and thrust government into action. She has received outstanding awards from ENLACE(Latino Children's Educational Network), the Universal Business and Media School, the Harding Park Homeowners Association, the North Bronx Community Democratic Club, the Neighborhood Self-Help by Older Persons Project, the Girl Scouts and the Bronx Head Start Directors.
Council Member Lucy Cruz, married to retired New York City Police Department Sergeant Orlando Cruz, is the daughter of Guillermina Rodriguez and Benito Morales. As homeowners, Lucy and Orlando have lived and worked in this same community for the past twenty-five years, where they raised their three children-Christopher, Illiana and Brandon-all of whom attended New York City public schools and have gone on to college.
