Info | Whether in defending our country, educating our children, or passing measures to better our lives, Vito Pinto has always been a leader. Nowhere is this better demonstrated than on Westchester’s Board of Legislators, where Vito is now serving his third term, representing the Town of Eastchester, the Village of Tuckahoe and the City of New Rochelle (mid-city to the north end).
Vito was elected to Westchester’s 17-member Legislature in 1997, the first Democrat to represent his District. From 1983 to 1985, he was a member of the Tuckahoe Village Board and then he was elected to the Eastchester Town Council where he served three terms.
Vito attributes his success in politics to his willingness to listen to his constituents and to act conscientiously on their behalf. He is a firm believer in the importance of citizen knowledge and participation in county government. At his urging, the County Board has scheduled more nighttime meetings and meetings in local communities.
Vito is as interested in citizen protection as he is participation. For example, he was a prime sponsor of legislation to keep guns out of the hands of kids. He has also been one of the major forces behind upgrading the County’s emergency response services to Westchester municipalities. Vito has been the legislature’s staunchest supporter of County property tax breaks for Senior Citizens and the disabled.
Legislator Pinto, a Vietnam veteran who flew over 100 combat missions, has secured tax reductions for veterans and continues to fight for other measures that would benefit men and women who have served in the armed forces.
Currently, Vito chairs the County Officers Department Committee and serves on the Public Works Committee, Housing Committee, Legislation Committee, Seniors Committee, Parks,Recreation and Conservation Committee and is the County Board Liaison to the Westchester County Parks, Recreation and Conservation Board and the Central Veterans Service Committee.
The Public Works Committee also oversees the Department of Environmental Facilities that is responsible for the waste water treatment plants, main sewer trunk lines and environmental programs dealing with yard waste and recycling.
The Special Committee on Parks, Recreation and Conservation that oversees County owned parkland, swimming pools, golf courses, trailways, gardens and Playland Amusement Park. A former Chair of this Committee, Vito has been especially active in maintaining and enhancing the Bronx River Parkway Reservation. Because of Vito, Scout Field in Bronxville, used by so many Eastchester residents, has been completely renovated, with new soccer and baseball fields added. Vito is the Board of Legislators’ appointment to the Westchester County Parks, Recreation and Conservation Board.
Vito is a member of the Special Committee on Seniors that discusses all matters of health, and programs vital to our senior citizen population; the Environment & Health Committee that deals with open space issues, clean drinking water, pesticides, diseases and clean air as related to smoking and air pollution; the County Officers Department Committee that is responsible for interviewing all management appointments and civilian appointments to County citizen boards; and the Special Committee on Energy that researches sources of savings and the use of electrical, gas and solar energy.
Born in Tuckahoe, N.Y., Legislator Pinto graduated from Tuckahoe High School in 1958; received his BS Degree in Industrial Arts Education from SUNY Oswego in 1962; and received an MA in Guidance and Counseling from New York University in 1974. He enlisted in the United States Navy and attended Flight Officer Training School receiving his NFO wings in 1963. Discharged from the Navy after serving two tours of duty, Vito began his teaching and guidance-counseling career. He also has been a coach and student government advisor. After a career in education that spanned thirty-two years, he retired from the Tuckahoe School District in June, 2002.
Vito lives with his wife “Sally” in Tuckahoe and has four children and three grandchildren.
