Info | Andrea Stewart-Cousins, Democratic State Senate Candidate for the 35th Senate District, is presently serving her 6th term as a Westchester County Legislator for the city of Yonkers. During her tenure on the County Legislature, she has served in numerous leadership positions, including Chair of the powerful Legislation Committee; Chair of the Family, Health and Human Services Committee; and Majority Whip. She was recently elected by her colleagues as Board Vice Chair for the County Legislature.
In 2004 she ran for State Senate as a progressive outsider and came within striking distance of beating one of Albany’s most entrenched incumbents. Among her endorsers in that campaign were EMILY’s List, the National Organization of Women (Westchester Chapter), National Association of Social Workers, Citizen Action and Tenants PAC. After a lengthy legal battle, the incumbent claimed a narrow and disputed victory with a mere 18 votes.
Andrea will bring extensive experience from both the private and public sector to the State Senate. A former AT&T marketing professional, journalist, teacher, and personnel manager, she began her career in government with her appointment in 1992 as Yonkers’ Director of Community Affairs. After serving a four-year term, she ran successfully for public office in 1995.
Andrea was recognized by the Eleanor Roosevelt Legacy Committee and is the recipient of several honors and citations, including the Thurgood Marshall Award, and leadership awards from The Westchester Arts Council, the NAACP, American Cancer Society, the ACLU, and the National Association of Social Workers. She has also been named “Woman of the Year” by the Business and Professional Women’s Club, “Legislator of the Year” by the Community Health Centers of New York State, and “Leader in Social Justice” by Pace law School. She helped found SOYO (Southwest Yonkers Planning Association), “Riverfest,” and “Art on Main,” to help revitalize Yonkers’ downtown waterfront as well as laying the groundwork for Yonkers’ first “Policy of Inclusion,” to benefit women- and minority-owned businesses. She also created the first union/government internship programs for youth in New York State and established Yonkers’ first internship program for the disabled. During her tenure at the County Legislature, she authored and passed landmark legislation including the county’s first Human Rights Laws. The bill created a commission with subpoena and enforcement power to protect against discrimination in employment, business, and housing. It has been called the most progressive bill of its kind.
Legislator Stewart-Cousins earned her Bachelor of Science Degree from Pace University and her teaching credentials in Business Education from Lehman College. She is pursuing a Masters in Public Administration at Pace University. The mother of three – all graduates of Yonkers public schools – she resides in the city of Yonkers with her husband Tom.
Andrea Stewart-Cousins is running for the State Senate to fight for change in a state legislature that is widely recognized by good government advocates as one of the most dysfunctional legislatures in the nation. She has pledged to fight for fair funding for schools, more affordable housing and protections for the environment, as well as for reforms to make our state government more open and accountable to its citizens.
