InfoNew York City Councilman, 1994-2001.

Alfonso C. Stabile was born in the East New York section of Brooklyn and began his education at P.S. 64. Soon after, his family moved to Ozone Park. Al attended John Adams High School and completed his education at York College and the University of Maryland.

Al enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1967 and served in the Sixth Infantry Division. He reached the rank of sergeant and proudly served in Vietnam. After leaving the military, Al went to work for the New York City Department of Sanitation. He married Sara Jane Friia in 1969, and from this union. Frank and Connie were born. It was during this time that Al bought his first piece of real estate, his first investment.

Al's realty business prospered and, in 1979, he was introduced to the Ozone-Howard Little League by his son Frank. After years of managing, administration work and fundraising, Al was elected president of the organization. Through Al's efforts - along with a dedicated staff of volunteers-the Ozone-Howard Little League has become one of the largest, self-sufficient leagues in the country.

Al has helped raise money for children with life-threatening diseases, the handicapped, churches, schools, civic organizations and community boards. He also serves as vice president of the international Society of SS. Cosma & Damiano, a philanthropic organization that has donated monies to St. Francis Heart Hospital, St Jude Children's Hospital and the Ronald McDonald House in New Hyde Park.

In recognition for his many works, Al has received numerous humanitarian awards. In 1991, the New York City Sub-Contractors honored him for his contributions in ridding the city of the "Devil's Playground" in the Bronx, an abandoned lot across from a grammar school that was used by drug dealers, users and prostitutes. Al's efforts turned the lot into a parking lot for P.S. 43. He also has received the mayor's "Good Guy" Award and the Bronx borough president's "Certificate of Merit".

In 1992, Al was honored as Man of the Year by the Queens Council of the Boy Scouts of America. In August 1992 and again in April 1993, Al was chosen by the Special Olympic Organization as their Man of the Year. Al also has been honored by Rep. Floyd Flake the St. Anthony Society, the Metro Assembly of God Church, the Bronx Borough President, the Taxi an Limousine Commission and the Queens Chapter of the American Cancer Society.

When a local volunteer firehouse was in need of a new building, they turned to Al, who contacted construction firms who would be willing to help a worthy cause. The building was built and, in March 1993, the department awarded Al with a commemorative plaque for his help.

Al also obtained land no longer needed by the New York State Department of Traffic and is converting it into much-needed baseball fields for the families of South Queens. These ballparks are being created at no expense to the city, state or federal government, but are made possible through the generosity of community-minded business people who donate their time and labor.

In Al's own words:"I believe a good community-minded person should be concerned about three very important things: First, the youth for they are the future, Second, the elderly for what they have given us: and Third, the handicapped for they truly need our help and support."

In November 1993, Al was elected to the New York City Council to represent the 32nd Council District, unseating a long-time incumbent in a hard-fought campaign.
