Info | In January, 2002, Lew Fidler began his first term as Councilman for the 46th District. As a Freshman Council Member, Fidler was selected by then Council Speaker Gifford Miller to serve as Chairperson of the Youth Services Committee. This past year, his colleagues elected him to a position on the Council leadership team: Assistant Majority Leader.
Education has always been a high priority for Lew Fidler. As Councilmember, he is extremely proud to have obtained both capital and expense budget items for every school in his district during each year that he has been in office. Fidler has introduced several legislative initiatives with regard to Department of Education policies and procedures, and is currently working to overturn the cell phone ban and bring significant change to the high school admissions process.
Councilman Fidler has fought to provide funding for the numerous projects that benefit the diverse population of his district. For our youth, he has restored funding to the Summer Youth Employment Program and youth programs at several community centers. Senior center funding has been enriched, and Councilman Fidler has been a driving force behind the creation of the Senior center at Marine Park. Monies have been allocated for graffiti removal, sanitation services, school crossing guards, and revitalization of several local business districts and renovation of parks from Canarsie to Gerritsen Beach.
As a member of the Speaker’s five person leadership team, Council Member Fidler is actively involved in decision-making regarding citywide policy, legislation and budget. The other Council Committees on which Council Member Fidler currently serves are Finance, Rules, Housing and Buildings , State and Federal Legislation, Education and Veteran’s Affairs.
Councilman Fidler is a proud resident of the 46th Council District, where he resides with his wife, Robin and sons, Max and Harry.
