InfoBarbara graduated summa cum laude in 1987 from Lawrence University with a degree in Spanish, and earned her M.A. in 1991 from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. She completed her studies while raising their two children: Amanda and her husband, Scott Krupp, live with their daughter Molly in Waunakee; Joseph and his bride, Sarah, live on Madison’s east side with their daughter Bella. And there will be two more grandchildren before the year is out!

Barbara’s introduction to civic engagement came naturally through her commitment to providing opportunity for all Green Bay area children by ensuring a strong system of public schools. She was a founding member of the Educational Resource Foundation and then a founding trustee of the Greater Green Bay Area Community Foundation. She served on the Board for the Northeastern Wisconsin Technical College Foundation. And Barbara has served Planned Parenthood-Green Bay for decades, and later sat on the state Planned Parenthood Advocates-Wisconsin Board. She is a member of the League of Women Voters and the American Association of University Women.

Waves of immigration added to a rapidly diversifying population in northeastern Wisconsin. Barbara joined other citizens determined to create a welcoming context for these new residents by founding Latinos Unidos and later Green Bay’s Multicultural Center. She served on the first Advisory Board to Entrepreneurs of Color and received their first Founders’ Award this year. In 1985, she received the Fort Howard Foundation's Humanitarian Award.

The Lawtons lived in Oaxaca, Mexico (1985) and Santiago, Chile (1994-95). Upon return from Chile, Barbara gave a seminar at St. Norbert College’s Bemis Center on doing business in the southern cone of South America. And she frequently provided cross-cultural training for companies sending employees abroad. First-time Hispanic visitors to the Lt. Governor’s capitol office are often surprised when their meetings are conducted entirely in Spanish. Lt. Governor Lawton emphasizes cultural accessibility to government as a citizen’s right.

Barbara served on the "Citizens’ Panel for a Clean Elections Option," which became better known as the "Heffernan Commission" for the former Chief Justice who chaired it. She staunchly supports full public financing of campaigns and the Lt. Governor continues to lead work toward genuine campaign finance reform in Wisconsin.
