Alois Philipp Maria von und zu Liechtenstein was born on June 11, 1968 in Zurich, Switzerland to Prince Hans-Adam II and Princess Marie of Liechtenstein. He succeeded his father, who resigned the office, to become the Sovereign Monarch of Liechtenstein.
Prince Alois spent his youth at the Vaduz Castle together with his parents, siblings and grandparents. Like his father, he attended the primary school in Vaduz-Ebenholz and entered the Liechtenstein Grammar School in 1979. He passed the school leaving examination (type B, literature and history section) in the spring of 1987. Subsequently, he entered the Royal Military Academy at Sandhurst (Great Britain), where he completed his officer's training. On receiving his commission as second lieutenant, he served for six months in the Coldstream Guards in Hong Kong and London. In October 1988, Prince Alois enrolled as a student of jurisprudence at the Salzburg University.
He completed these studies in 1993 with a master's degree. Starting with September 1993 and until May 1996 he worked at a London auditing company. Since then he again lives in Vaduz and is active in various domains of the princely assets.
On July the 3rd 1993 Hereditary Prince Alois of Liechtenstein married Duchess Sophie in Bavaria. They have four children - Prince Joseph Wenzel, born on the 24th of May 1995 - Princess Marie Caroline on the 17th of October 1996 - Prince Georg, born on the 20th of April 1999 - Prince Nikolaus, born on the 6th of December 2000.
