InfoMy parents and I immigrated to the US when I was young so they could pursue their Doctorate degrees. After a brief return to India, we came back to the US and made it our permanent home. I grew up in the Pacific Northwest, graduating from Mt Rainier High School.

Both my parents taught college, initially as adjunct instructors and eventually at Evergreen State College and Seattle University. That meant growing up, our income was unstable and based on availability of classes. So we started the Urvasi Orissi Dance Company and performed throughout the Seattle area. Arts Grants helped us bridge the gap as we gave lecture demonstrations at area schools.

In high school I ran track and field, placed in State competitions on the debate team, and was on the All-state Dance and Drill Team. After graduating, I attended South Seattle Community College and eventually joined the Air Force.

I served 10 years in both enlisted and officer ranks in the US Air Force, working in Construction Management and as an Executive Officer. After being Honorably discharged, I continued to serve as a military spouse. I went to work for a B2B company in Japan teaching Business and English to executives. During my time there I earned a Level 3 Japanese language proficiency certificate. Upon reassignment to Washington State, I became tenured faculty at Spokane Community College.

While there I was key in developing the high school to college transfer curriculum. As a Union member, I advocated for equitable compensation for adjunct faculty. Eventually, as military reassignments became more frequent, I started my own small business that would move with us.

My advocacy work has led me to Richmond numerous times over the years. I testified before House and Senate committees and met with legislators on both sides of the aisle on a wide range of issues. I lobbied as a Virginia resident on pay & wage equity, workers’ rights, reproductive care access, transgender rights, gun control, pedestrian & bicycle safety, transit access, clean energy, and the Equal Rights Amendment.

In our community, I am on the boards of Faith Alliance for Climate Solutions and The Reston Chorale. I am also active with the NAACP and the American Association for University Women (AAUW). In the Fairfax County Democratic Committee (FCDC), I serve as the Co-Chair of the Veterans and Military Families Caucus and Co-Vice Chair of Diversity and Outreach. Regionally, I was elected as the 1st Vice Chair for the Democratic Asian Americans of Virginia (DAAV) and am the Mid-Atlantic & Southern Regional Director for South Asians for America (SAFA).
