Whig before the Civil War and Unionist in 1860-1861
Democrat until 1896 when he found WJ Bryan abhorrent. He supported Palmer (Gold Democrat in NC) that year. He described himself as an Independent Democrat from 1897 to 1901 and joined the Republican Party in 1902 when that party endorsed his independent candidacy for NC Chief Justice.
