InfoElisa Cardnell was born on an Army base in Germany. She showed early leadership skills in high school as the president of a club that helped girls and minority students pursue STEM careers. She balanced academics with sports and orchestra, graduating at the top of her class and earning her way to Rice University.

At Rice, she studied political science and worked part time to pay her way through school. She was a member of the Marching Owl Band and the NROTC unit. Upon graduation, she received her commission in the Navy and reported to duty in Norfolk, Virginia.

Elisa served aboard USS Ramage (DDG 61) for two years, completing a seven month deployment to the Arabian Gulf as the anti-submarine warfare officer. In 2009, her division's hard work earned the ship the Bloodhound award - the best submarine hunters on the East coast. She then worked in the public affairs office for the Commander, Naval Surface Force Atlantic, where she coordinated tours of the surface ships for visitors, wrote speeches, and was part of the commissioning effort for USS New York (LPD 21). She also worked in the personnel office, where she saw the effects of budget cuts on ships' and sailors' readiness and morale.

After the birth of her daughter, Elisa decided to leave active duty and returned to Houston. She remained in the Reserves, earning the Texas Reserve Officer Association's Junior Officer of the Year award in 2015. She was selected for command and for Lieutenant Commander before her service-connected health issues required that she leave the service in the spring of 2018.

Meanwhile, she earned her Master of Arts in Teaching from Rice University in 2014. Elisa became a physics teacher, with a passion for hands-on learning. She taught in Houston ISD, until budget cuts took her to Spring Branch ISD, where she taught physics and math. As a single mom, Elisa moved to teaching at a private school for a better balance with her home life. Across these various schools, she noticed that most of her students have developed the mentality that how they do on a test defines them, not how they approach a problem. This reliance on metrics rather than holistic analysis struck Elisa as something that is not limited to education, and worth changing.

Her experiences have led her to believe that we can do better for our children and for our society. By focusing on the people at the heart of any issue, we can come up with effective and meaningful policy for change.
