InfoA lifelong Democrat, Ghazala Hashmi and her family have lived in Chesterfield County for nearly 30 years. She is committed to Virginia, its residents, and to the goals of providing access to affordable, quality higher education, focusing on workforce development, ensuring strong public schools, and expanding healthcare services to rural areas.

Ghazala grew up in Georgia and was drawn to the vision of public service embodied by Jimmy Carter. She identifies President Carter’s lifelong commitment to integrity, social justice, and ethics in governance as the defining pillars of her own service engagement. As an immigrant living in a small college town in the South, Ghazala was eyewitness to the cultural, racial, and socioeconomic divides that can often polarize communities. But she also witnessed the resilience and strength of community building as diversity fostered dialogue and as education opened doors of opportunity, awareness, and development across those divisions.

As a college professor and administrator, Ghazala has worked in the Virginia Community College System for over 17 years and understands the profound value that access to quality higher education provides to all of our residents. In 2013, she was named by Chancellor Glenn Dubois as a member of the statewide Strategic Plan Taskforce and helped to develop Complete 2021, a six-year vision for Virginia’s community colleges. Ghazala points to the immense rewards of working within a community college: these institutions directly serve our local communities and their residents, and their graduates transform not only their own lives but the lives of their families and neighbors through education.

As a Board Member of the Richmond Chapter of the Virginia Center for Inclusive Communities (VCIC), Ghazala commits herself to the goals of building inclusive values and social structures that support all communities, regardless of race, religion, ethnicity, ability, and gender identification. She tried to instill these values of acceptance and community when she served as a Girl Scout Troop Leader from 2006 – 2008, and Ghazala re-affirms this focus in her interactions with students and faculty.

Ghazala and her husband Azhar moved to the Richmond area in 1991 and immediately fell in love with its rich history, its blends of diverse communities, and its commitment to education, culture, and economic development. Their daughters Yasmin and Noor were both born and raised in Midlothian and educated in Chesterfield County Public Schools. Because Central Virginia and its residents have given so much to Ghazala and to her family, she is eager to give back, through public service, her energy, insights, and passion to improve lives, build community, and strengthen Virginia.
