He graduated from Red Wing High School and then attended St. Olaf College in Northfield, Minn. He later graduated from UW-River Falls with a bachelor's degree.
On Aug. 13, 1938, he married Marion Scheide. They made their home in Prescott, where he taught at the high school in 1942. Later that year he was commissioned in the U.S. Navy, taking his training at Dartmouth College in Hanover, N.H.
He began his rank as Lt. J.G. and advanced to the rank of Lt. Commander. He served as an instructor of Naval cadets in Corpus Christi, Texas, before being assigned to a naval air station in North Africa. With the ending of the war, he was assigned to the FDR aircraft carrier as an administrative officer on the carrier air group 75 in the Pacific.
