Corner VIRGINIA BEACH - Sheldon Larry Corner, a retired U.S. Navy captain, a longtime Virginia Beach resident and at one time its chief deputy treasurer, died Friday, Nov. 7, 2008, in his home. "Shel," to all his friends, was born July 14, 1924, in Hazelton, Pa., the only child of Mary Perry and Edward Corner. He spent his childhood in Far Rockaway, on Long Island, N.Y. He married June Hildreth of Newton, Mass., on Aug. 27, 1949, and she preceded him in death after 51 happy years of marriage. He is now survived by his loving second wife, Nancy; and his children and their families: Steve, Saundra, Rex, Bailey and Scott; Laurel Anne and Mary Lois; and Richard, Kim, Meredith and Augie. After high school, Sheldon attended the Cooper Union and its Nerken School of Engineering in New York for a year, and then enlisted in the Navy under the World War II V-5 Officer Training Program and was ordered into Naval aviation - becoming a designated Naval aviator in 1944. Over the years, he would fly nearly everything with a propeller - from C-45 Bugsmashers, to Curtiss Helldivers, to AD "Spads", to E-2 Hawkeyes, and even Navy blimps. And in so doing, he became one of the Navy's better-known unreconstructed prop guys. Following a stint as a "plowback" flight instructor, he entered the light attack pipeline and served tours in VA-34 (nee VB-3) at NAS Oceana, 1946 to 1948, and later in VA-75, then on the west coast. He deployed to the Far East, and also became very well acquainted with the Med over the years. While a lieutenant, he attended the University of California and earned his Bachelor of Science degree in government, as a magna cum laude graduate. Later tours of duty in Jacksonville, Fla., and at NAS Guantanamo Bay with the Fleet Training Group, were followed by orders to graduate school at the Naval War College. Some years after that, he also received a master's degree in Business Administration from Old Dominion University. Sheldon's Naval career was decidedly rearranged in 1959 when, after returning to Virginia Beach and during jet transition training, he had to perform a crash landing in Olathe, Kan. He required several months to recover from serious injuries, but he eventually fought his way back into flight status, and he subsequently served a tour onboard USS Franklin D. Roosevelt as Air Boss. His return to Virginia Beach - again - after that was enduring. At NAS Norfolk he became the first commander of Air Wing Twelve, the Atlantic Fleet's Airborne Early Warning Wing, and concurrently the first commanding officer of RVAW-120, the wing's Fleet Replacement Training Squadron. He commanded two ships and had a major shore command based in Norfolk - but with detachments throughout the eastern U.S. - before retiring in 1974, having served 32 well-traveled years on active duty and earning many awards and unit decorations along the way. His next claim to fame was as chief deputy treasurer of the City of Virginia Beach for five years in the late 1970s. Thereafter, he campaigned twice for a seat on city council, not successfully, but he threw a victory party anyway. He and June were members for many years of the Oceanfront's Galilee Episcopal Church. Sheldon served twice as one of its vestrymen and also as church treasurer for a time. He took a keen interest in city affairs and was an exponent of the restoration of the Virginia Beach Oceanfront Lifeguard Station. He authored an ethics guideline document for use by the city's governing bodies and was long active in the Beach's Clean the Bay Campaign. True to form, he was an avid boater and could often be seen out on the Virginia Beach waterways or beaches in one or another of the succession of boats which together comprised his own navy. He was a member of the Boy Scouts of America in his youth, a member at one time of the Norfolk and Jacksonville Navy Flying Clubs and a longtime member of the U.S. Naval Institute, the Association of Naval Aviation, the Tailhook Association and the Virginia Beach Sports Club. But above all, Sheldon was a devoted husband, a caring father, a doting grandfather, a faithful shipmate and a perpetually enthusiastic participant in his community. His family will indeed miss him and the Beach has lost a real friend. A memorial service for Sheldon will be held at Galilee Episcopal Church, 40th Street and Pacific Avenue in Virginia Beach, at 3 p.m. Tuesday by the Rev. Jay Magness.
