InfoJohn F. Dee, Jr., Attorney and basketball coach, served as the eighteenth City Auditor of Denver from 1975-1979. He was born on September 12, 1923 in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. He attended Loyola Academy in Chicago, Illinois, graduating in 1942. Answering the call of his country in 1942, John Dee entered the United States Coast Guard, serving as a transportation specialist along the Atlantic Coast. He served in the Coast Guard until 1944.
After his discharge, Mr. Dee enrolled at the University of Notre Dame in South Bend, Indiana. In his senior year, he transferred to Loyola University in Chicago, graduating in 1948 with a BA Degree in philosophy. In 1947, he married the former Katherine Noesen of Skokie, Illinois and they have three children. Mr. Dee furthered his education by attending law school at Notre Dame. He received his Doctor of Law degree in 1952.

From there, Mr. Dee accepted the position as head basketball coach at the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa, Alabama. He remained there until 1956. To highlight his career, the Crimson Tide earned the 1955-56 Southeastern Conference Championship with a record of 21-3, the best in Alabama history. The team was ranked fifth in the nation, and John Dee was named as Southeastern Conference Coach of the year.

In 1956, when the Denver Chicago Trucking Company hired John Dee, he moved with his family to Denver in order to head the company's executive training program. He coached the D-C Trucker's basketball team at the same time. He remained in both of these positions until 1962. During his tenure as a head coach, the D-C Truckers won the National Basketball League Championship in 1958-59. He also ran unsuccessfully in 1958 for the Colorado House of Representatives.

In 1962, Mr. Dee was admitted to the Colorado Bar. Soon after in the summer of 1963, Mayor Tom Currigan appointed Mr. Dee as the Manager of Parks and Recreation. He served in that capacity until 1964.

In June of 1964, John Dee returned to the University of Notre Dame, this time as head coach of the basketball team. He stayed there for seven years, until 1971, having taken his teams to one National Invitational Tournament and to four of the prestigious NCAA post-season tournaments. Mr. Dee, the first coach at Notre Dame to win 20 or more games for four consecutive years, often had his teams ranked among the top twenty in the nation.

In 1971, Mr. Dee returned to Denver to practice law full-time. He continued with his private practice until 1975, interrupting it on one occasion in 1972 to make an unsuccessful run for the Office of District Attorney. In 1975, Mr. Dee was elected to the Office of City Auditor of Denver. He led the field of eleven candidates in the municipal election winning by a margin of more than two to one in the run-off. His term is credited with further updating and upgrading the accounting and business procedures of the Auditor's Office.

Following his term as Auditor, John Dee returned to practicing law. He also served as a Vice-President of XO Exploration, Inc., a Denver based oil and gas company. He was a member of the American Legion, the Most Precious Blood Roman Catholic Church and a fourth degree Knight of Columbus. Mr. Dee passed away April 24, 1999, following a battle with cancer.
