I started my political career in Grand Junction where I worked for our Republican party and became State Chairman for the Colorado Young Republicans. I visited some South American Countries as a Young Political Leader and met their leaders. I defeated an incumbent democrat for District 55 in Grand Junction.
I was selected to visit NATO, Germany, Taiwan, and Japan on behalf of Colorado and the United States. I met my husband Senator Jim Brandon when we both were serving in the Colorado Legislature. We were the sponsors of the Colorado Home Protection law that was dubbed the “Make Your Day” law. This law allows homeowners to use deadly force against a home intruder to protect themselves and their families.
I was nominated by Governor Bill Owens to be Director of the Department of Labor and Employment. The Senate confirmed my nomination. One of the hardest times for our Country and at the Department was 9-11. Fortunately, we had updated our unemployment system as it was very antiquated. With the new system we were able to handle the large number of individuals laid off due to 9-11.
After 4 years at the Department my husband and I decided to move our children out to my husband’s home town, Akron, Colorado. Life without politics was difficult, but my husband and I were foster/adopt parents to 6 children who needed our attention. My desire to return to politics is allowed as our youngest is graduating from high school this year.
