Info | Member of the Executive Board of the European Central Bank (ECB) and Member of its Governing Council since December 15, 2012.
Upon obtaining a MA in Law (1973) and a postgraduate degree in Political Science (1975) at the University Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne, Mersch joined Luxembourg's Ministry of Finance in 1975 as an assistant to the IMF’s Belgian executive director. He was subsequently promoted to Attaché in 1978 and Adviser of International Financial and Monetary Relations until 1981.
After four years supervising the Luxembourg Stock Exchange (1985-89), and nine years as Director of Luxembourg's Treasury (1989-1998), Mersch was made Governor of Luxembourg's Central Bank (the Banque Centrale du Luxembourg) in 1998.
Mersch's attempt to gain a seat on the ECB Board in 2010 was blocked by national leaders and the European Parliament, which had in mind the selection of a woman instead. An opportunity presented itself with the resignation of Jose Manuel Gonzalez Paramo. Mersch was then formally presented as Luxembourg's candidate for the ECB Board and was voted in by the European Parliament in 2012.
