Info | Member of the Executive Board of the European Central Bank (ECB) since June 2011 and Chief Economist of its Governing Council since January 3, 2012.
Upon obtaining an BA (1971), MA (1972) and Phd (1980) in economics at the Université libre de Bruxelles, Praet immediately joined the University as professor of economics staying until 1987 when he was selected Chief Economist of Belgium's Générale de Banque, a position he held until 1999.
After a year (1999 to 2000) as Chief of Staff to Belgium's Minister of Finance, Didier Reynders, Praet was made Executive Director of the Banque Nationale de Belgique (Belgium's Central Bank) from 2000 to 2011.
After a few failed attempts at joining the ECB (the ECB preferred Central Bank Governors in its ranks rather than Executive Directors), Praet was finally admitted as Member in 2011, and later, was given the high honor of becoming its first non-German (Praet is a Belgian national) chief economist. Praet is responsible for human resources, budget and payment systems at the ECB.
