InfoSpain's Minister of Economy, Industry and Competitiveness between December 21, 2011 to March 7, 2018 until elevated to VICE PRESIDENT of the European Central Bank (ECB) on March 14, 2018 by the European Parliament, officially assuming the office on June 1, 2018.

EARLY CAREER:
Upon graduating the Colegio Universitario de Estudios Financieros with a BA in Economics in 1982, de Guindos joined the Jose Maria Aznar administration in 1996 as Director General for Economic and Competition Policy, moving up to its Secretary General in 2000, overseeing Spain's entry into the EU.

PRIVATE SECTOR:
A change of regime in 2004 pushed de Guindos into the private sector, where he appeared to languish through an odyssey of collapsed opportunity and back-office dead ends. Joining Lehman Brothers as an advisor in 2006, he was made an executive president covering Iberia, where he sat past 2008, when Lehman was submerged within Nomura Securities upon its bankruptcy. De Guindos then bid his time for two years as head of Price Waterhouse's financial services division in Spain until offered the chance to re-enter government as Spanish PM Mariano Rajoy's Economy Minister in 2011.

BACK IN GOVERNMENT:
De Guindos thrived within the Rajoy regime, winning plaudits for pushing through tough structural reforms in the financial sector and for expertly implementing austerity measures. De Guindos executed economic policy for Spain until mid 2018 when it was presumed the new Pedro Sanchez regime wanted to replace him. Widely expected to assume Jeroen Dijsselbloem's job as chief of the "Eurogroup" (a collective term for informal meetings of Eurozone finance ministers), De Guindos instead was (begrudgingly by Sanchez, it was said) Spain's official candidate for the vice-presidency of the European Central Bank, beating competitor, Irish Central Bank Governor Philip Lane, for the job.
