Info | 11th Governor of the CENTRAL BANK OF IRELAND since November 26, 2015 for a seven-year term.
Graduated from Dublin's Trinity University, receiving a PhD in economics from Harvard in 1995. Assistant Professor of Economics and International Affairs at Columbia University (1995-1997) before returning to Dublin as a senior academic at his alma mater, where he was made Whately chair of political economy and head of its economics department for 12 years until his appointment as Central Bank Governor. He remains chair of the advisory scientific committee of the European Systemic Risk Board and is an ex-officio member of the general board and steering committee of the ESRB.
In 2017, Lane was put forward by Minister of Finance Paschal Donohoe to succeed Vitor Constancio as European Central Bank (ECB) Vice President, withdrawing when it became clear that Spain's Luis de Guindos had more Euro-zone support.
Lane is expected to replace Peter Praet as the ECB's chief economist on May 2019, becoming the first Irish National on the ECB's Board (as of February 11, 2019, Eurozone finance ministers formally nominated Lane as chief economist of the ECB).
Moving to the ECB Board cuts short by four years Lane's reign as Governor. His position is expected to be filed by Vice Governor, Sharon Donnery.
