Info | Member of the Governing Council of the European Central Bank (ECB), President of the Deutsche Bundesbank since May 1, 2011 and Chairman of the Board of the Bank for International Settlements since November 1, 2015.
CAREER: Upon obtaining a "diplom" in economics from the University of Bonn and PhD at the University of Mannheim in 1997, Weidmann began his career working at the International Monetary Fund in Washington DC until 1999 when he became Secretary-General of the German Council of Economic Experts for the Assessment of Macroeconomic Development.
Joining the Bundesbank in 2003 to Head its Department of Monetary Policy and Monetary Analysis, Weidmann was tapped to personally advise Chancellor Angela Merkel in 2006 as Chief of the Department of Economic and Financial Policy (Division IV) at the Federal Chancellery.
In 2011, Weidmann built up enough bona fides to succeed Axel Weber to become the 8th President of the Bundesbank. His tenure has been heralded for his strict and sober banking practices. Weidmann also nurtured the rise of future ECB Executive Board member Sabine Lautenschläger and brought her in as his Vice President.
Weidmann has been tipped to replace Mario Draghi as President of the European Central Bank when Draghi's tenure ends in October 2019. Horse-trading and fierce competition for the top spot is expected to frustrate any smooth takeover by any single nation's champion, however.
